Shell confirmed a gas discovery within the Zechstein patch Reef play in the Pensacola prospect in the Southern North Sea, opening further horizons in the exploration and development of an “under-explored” geological play. Pensacola is just one of many similar structures mapped in the region and is thought to be analogous to producing fields in Poland, Germany and other fields in Northern Europe. Our team worked in petroleum prospectivity projects on the Permian Zechstein Carbonate Platform-Basin systems using surface and subsurface data aided by comparison studies with analogues to understand the geometry and variability of the patch reef structures and their depositional characteristics.
